A real mixed-bag of a novel here. Stewart Edward White's first hand knowledge of Africa shows throughout this tale and is the main reason to read it. But the lead character, Culbertson to his fellow Europeans but Kingozi ("the Bearded One") to native Africans, is likable enough. He's certainly competent and level-headed, which is why the British Colonial government chose him for an important mission to a little known region of Central Africa. Unfortunately World War One breaks out during his travels and this brings him into conflict with the female lead, the Leopard Woman herself. Given that label you might envision a forceful or even a feral woman for our hero to contend with. But no. She's Hungarian actually and not only was she not born in a jungle, she isn't even particularly knowledgeable about Africa. Still, for some reason she is tasked by the Germans with an important wartime mission of her own. And that pretty much ends the similarities between our two leads. Ostensibly both are acting out of patriotic duty but for the Leopard Woman spite and wounded vanity are still greater motivations. I spent most of this novel thoroughly disliking her but perhaps another reader, whose expectations of female competence were not distorted by decades of pulp fiction familiarity, might view her more charitably.

I liked the story, but, it was a little bit slow. The author certainly knows his way around African safaris in the years before the Great War. Better reading can be had in his book, African Campfires.
This is a story about two different safaris that meet by accident. One safari aids the second with water and medical aid . There is something strange about the second safari ,in that it is lead by a woman , and she seems to be loosing control of it. It is a great jungle adventure with a sense of mystery.
