This is a valuable book for historic purposes and I found it particularly useful for its work on braking systems. The book is comparatively brief and I would have preferred greater explanation of the various forms of multiple unit control, some of which are quite rare while others were used almost universally, not simply in street cars but in multiple unit rail vehicles as well. The book is US East Coast focused (as might be expected) and it may be important to note that some of the equipment referred to in the text was known by a different name in other countries (particularly in Australia, New Zealand and and the UK, but also on the US West Coast). For that reason a glossary might have been advisable to avoid confusion, even though this was not in the original. It might also be advisable if there is a future printing to combine the work with the Instruction and Maintenance Manual issued by one of the major companies to their shop foremen (which I'm sure still exist in museum archives) which explain how these principles were applied in the car barn as well as on the road.Product details

The Motorman and His Duties a Handbook of Theory and Practice for Operating Electric Cars Ludwig Gutmann 9781372704628 Books Reviews
excellent
The opening chapters on Electricity is the best ever written. Amazing how much these Motormen had to know before setting out on these worderful cars.
This was a gift for an avid trolley lover, my husband. He used to drive trolleys at a local museum as a volunteer. He really enjoyed this book.
